U.S. Cardiologist gets 10-Year Jail for excess procedures

Right in the time of the healthcare debate and the enlightening article by Dr. Gawande about excess healthcare driving up costs, comes this news about Cardiologist Dr. Patel going to jail for doing a lot of unnecessary procedures. He is trained as an interventional cardiologist and performed at least 51 unwarranted stent placements. He allegedly falsified medical records and included chest pain symptoms even when patients did not have any.
"US District Court Judge Tucker Melançon called Patel "a brilliant and talented physician" and stated he was unsure whether the doctor was driven by pure greed or ego. Regardless, Melançon had little sympathy for Patel when sentencing him, noting that the doctor lied during his 19 days of testimony, contradicting findings made by the government witness, according to the Advocate."
