Public Sector Doctor Salaries in Kuwait - A Glimpse

The word "Kuwait" might make you envision caskets full of oil and baskets full of dollars - but salaried doctors in the public health system of Kuwait make the lowest salaries in the six countries that make up the GCC region (Gulf Cooperation Council)

This news article talks about how a Kuwaiti doctor who completed residency and fellowships in the United States went back to receive a salary or 1200 Kuwaiti Dinars (KD) a month (i.e. US $ 4326.66 a month or about US $52,000 a year) while a physician with similar fellowships makes about US $450,000 in University of Minnesota.

This salary lies at the bottom of the barrel when compared to salaries in neighboring GCC countries - like a Kuwaiti doctor working in Saudi Arabia makes about 60,000 KD a year or about US $215,000 a year), while in Qatar the salary average of a doctor is between 3,000 KD to 5,000 KD a month (i.e. $130,000 to $216,000 a year in US Dollars)

The health care system Kuwait is a mixture of public and private enterprises. A lot of wealthy Kuwaiti guys go abroad for their treatments. And as this guide to Kuwait says, "Although some of Kuwait’s doctors and medical staff are local, the vast majority are foreign and were trained in their home countries. The attraction of Kuwait for them is the same as for most other expatriates: financial reward."

Hmmm...the private practitioners must be making pretty good money then.....need to find about that one...

Now, if only could make oil / gasoline at home like I can make Coke / Soda at Home

Thank you pointing that out - I checked back the sources, that particular news story most likely had a typo on the Saudi Salary - instead of 6600 Ryals a month, it should be 66,000 A month, which still means over $200,000 in US Dollars a year.

Here's another article that points to more that $200,000 salaries for medical specialists in Saudi Arabia and here
s another source

@ Digital Doc

Sir, sallaries in kuwait are much higher than what u expect. I lived there for 16 yrs and my father was a doctor there. His sallary was 1400KD though he was an FCPS (Pak). But the sallaries of Diplomat of American Boards is much higher than those of any other qualifications. A US Board ceritified gets more than 3500KD per year with annual increments plus allowances like free air travell and furnished accomodation.

1 KD = 3.3 US Dollars

Kuwait is a country with high pays if u r a US board certified. :)

Thanks for filling us up on that :)
