Doctor Salaries in Malta (Public Sector)
Keeping alive this blogs evolving mission of being a reference site for physician salaries in USA AND the rest of the world, lets give a glimpse to how docs fare income-wise in Malta. As a school-kid, I enjoyed collecting postal stamps and the first time I heard about the existence of Malta was when my uncle gifted me a Malta postage stamp. Now I know that Malta is a small but beautiful European country made up of seven islands on the Mediterranean sea with a of population about half a million and is a tourist hot-spot.
University of Malta is pretty well recognized in the region for its quality medical ed
ucation and has plenty of foreign medical students and doctors in training. According to this 2006 book, Corporate Investment Opportunities in the New Europe
, Malta's health-care system was ranked 10th by the World Health Organization and most of the Maltese Physician specialists were trained in UK or USA.
In an attempt to reduce the physician brain drain, the Medical Association of Malta recently reached an agreement with its doctors to have salaries bumped up at all levels and here are the figures:
Consultants are the highest paid doctors in Malta, like we saw how 'Consultant' is the highest medical title one can have when we glimpsed at doctor incomes in United Kingdom.
Maltese Physician Consultants with 12 sessions a year:
- Lm13,011 / €30,307 (or US $43,500) in 2007
rise to Lm28,080/€65,409 a year in 2010 (or US $ 94,000 a year)
(The clause is they cannot do private practice during their tenure.)
A consultant with no sessions:
Rise to Lm18,693/€43,543 in 2010 (or US $63,000 a year )
(remuneration will then increase depending on the number of sessions they have)
Senior Registrars:
Lm16,217/€37,775 in 2007
Rise to Lm21,275/€49,557 by 2010 (or US $ 71,400 a year).
House Officers or Residents:
Lm10,769/€25,085 in 2007
Rise to Lm13,470/€31,377 by 2010. (or US $45,000) ( with 58 hour work weeks & four week of leave per year). - pretty similar to what residents make in the United States
(as usual, residents make the lowest incomes ...)
