2007 USA Physician Salaries Survey Results: Merritt Hawkins

The Words "Salary" , "Salt" and "Soldier" have a lot in common. For one, the Word "salary" comes from Latin "salarium" which implied a soldiers allowance paid in salt. Apparently salt was hot commodity then and was used as a payment mechanism for a soldiers services. So then... does a person's salary reflect if he or she is 'worth his salt ?' :-)
For physicians, salaries mostly reflect a complex interplay of supply-demand equations and how procedural their field is ! Before this, I have posted results and links to several doctor income surveys on this blog. Merritt Hawkins and Associates recently published the results of their latest 2007 survey and here are the specialties that saw the biggest increases in base pre-bonus salaries:
- Urology
- Otolaryngology
- Cardiology
- Emergency Medicine
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Family Practice.
Good news for Family Medicine then ! ...thanks to increased demand seen across the nation.
Here's a concise table of the results of that survey:

The highest on the high salary offers above is Neurosurgery with $850,000/- per year and the lowest on the high salary offers is Pediatrics with $200,000/- per year.
Hospitalist Position continues to see a hot trend in recruiting by the Hospitals and Pediatrics is on the Rise.

Post Your Comment !well, there is one very obvious mistake, the salary for radiology is mentioned as 580k average and 500k max, how is that possible?
You are a trouble maker aren't you ? He he...corrections always welcome..
yes the average was 380K ..my typo :-) Correction made !
is there a speciality called " urgent care" ?
cause i come by this add on the net
http://www.mdsearch.com/Physician-Jobs/Job-Details/Urgent-Care/Ohio-112693/
they said 400k per annum for 15 12hrs shift per month!!!!
seems very good one!!!!
another add was 160 k per annum for only 3 8hrs shifts per week?!!!!
i searched for urgent care speciality or fellowship on frieda but couldnot find one!!!!!!!
That '401K' mentioned on the link you provided is not a 400K salary ..:-) - rather it stands for an employer-sponsored retirement plan - or a pension kinda thing - Read more about 401K on Wikipedia
Salaries for urgent care would hover around US $ 170K to US $ 200K a year (more of less) depending on the type of setting, type of partnership and the amount of work done..
The first Urgent care fellowship started in 2006 by collaboration between the Department of Family Medicine University Hospitals of Cleveland / Case School of Medicine, the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA), and University Primary and Specialty Care Practices, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio. Read about that here
Besides Internal Medicine, other specialties like Family medicine and pediatrics are eligible too..with urgent care training in that domain and certified by Urgent Care Association of America.
The Difference between Urgent Care and Emergency Care: Urgent Care is for ambulatory patients who need attention for serious illness but do not face the threat of immediate death ..like say a bad sprain - while Emergency Care / Critical Care is for the patients with life-threatening acute conditions like Acute Myocardial Infarctions
how much per hour? :-(
$75-$110
