General Practitioners (Family Medicine Docs) in England Are Making Big Bucks
250,000 Pounds a Year translates to US$ 507,248/- a year, which perhaps only what the specialist surgeons like Neurosurgeons and the likes of Interventional cardiologists in America can hope to make - and yet it's the kind of money that some of the General Practitioners in UK are making.
Official data showed that 50% of the the England GPs were making more than 100,000 Pounds a year ( US$ 202,899/- in July 2007 Exchange rates) and 10% of them made more than 150,000 Pounds a year ( US$ 304,349/- in July 2007 Exchange rates)
All this due to the 2004 contract where the GPs were to be rewarded more for being on the forefront of care and improve preventive care services. I personally think rewarding primary care is good - but then, when these docs starting enjoying the pay and cutting back on work by closing down evening patients and taking whole weekends off, and still making crazy money - then you begin to feel - "OK..they MUST be getting overpaid then !"
Before the 2004 Contract - the average pays were 70,000 Pounds a year (US$ $142,029 in July 2007 Exchange rates), which were just a wee bit less than the national average of family medicine docs in USA

However, the above figures must be kept in the context of the higher taxes and higher cost of living - the principles of purchasing power parity (PPP) must be borne in mind before deciding if the salary is really higher or not as compared to another country - shall hopefully cover calculating PPP later. Secondly, the General Practitioners in UK do more than the Family practitioners in US.
And how do incomes of General Practitioners in the Rest of the United Kingdom Fare in 2006-2007? Here are the average earnings figures:
England = 103,500 pounds a year
N. Ireland = 91,500 pounds a year
Wales = 92,000 Pounds a year
Scotland = 83,000 Pounds a year
Scotland, with the lowest figures, obviously faces the problem of docs exiting to more lucrative neighbors :-) Just like Canadians move to USA and New Zealanders move to Aussie land
Recently, the UK and the PLAB exams lost their charm for the International medical graduates (IMGs) due to the new visa rules which force employers to first look at European Union doctors before hiring the outsiders. The IMGs are focusing on America, Australia, New Zealand and Canada instead !

Post Your Comment !Long may it last! It's about time society recognised GPs for knowing 75% of what specialist know about each of 30 or so different specialties
My advice is: Don't even think about moving to New Zealand to practice medicine! Successive governments have orchestrated things so that we are essentially castrated civil servants, able to prescribe only outdated drugs, and unable to arrange any advanced imaging. We are taken for granted by ignorant arrogant Kiwi patients, and treated like criminals on parole by the Medical Council. I have a four month old son, and I will do everything in my power to dissuade him from becoming a doctor in this country.
