Burn Surgeon Salaries

Here are some representative, annual averages of mid-career, median salaries that physicians trained in burn surgery can expect to make:

  • Houston, TX: $266,000/-
  • Los Angeles, CA: $295,000/-
  • Miami, FL: $255,000/-
  • New York, NY: $310,000/-
  • Seattle, WA: $295,000/-

National Average: 265,000/-

These are averages of all settings (academic, private, public) - private settings will have higher pays and those with partnership options even more.

The salaries mentioned mentioned above may look big for say the internists, but the burn specialty is facing a lack of enough physicians due to various issues - 'messy' surgeries, long work hours, unpredictable and uncontrolled lifestyles ad the fact that most of the burn patients are from the lower socioeconomic classes, with low-paying insurances or no insurance. This is why plastic surgeons are more drawn to other high paying, better-funded patient specialties with cosmetic flavors. For those interested, I recommend reading this excellent article about various highs and lows concerning the burn specialists in USA.

Q. How to be a burn surgery specialist physician in the USA ?

A. To be a Burn surgery specialist, a candidate must complete a one or two-year fellowship in Burn Surgery. Now, To be eligible for a Burn Surgery Fellowship, most fellowship programs would like to see income candidates to have first completed residency training in either a 5-year General Surgery or Plastic Surgery residency. But many programs also accept applications from candidates who have completed 3 years of residency training in General Surgery - for example, check out the pre-requisites of the burn fellowship programs at the Vanderbilt Medical Center and the Southern Illinois University school of medicine.
