Optometrist Salaries
An Optometrist (also called Optometric Physicians at times) is a eye-care health professional trained to diagnose and treat via non-surgical means, the disorders of vision and the eyes - like refractive errors, glaucoma, diabetic neuropathy, etc. They cannot perform surgeries , eye-surgeries fall under the scope of an ophthalmologist. Traditionally, optometrists were concerned only with correction of vision after first measuring it - hence the term Optometry ('metry' implies measurements)

Q. How to be an Optometrist in America ?
A. Gotta goto school baby .... A 3 to 4 year pre-optometry undergraduate college after high school can land you a spot in an Optometry school after you successfully take the Optometry Admissions Test during the undergraduate years. The Optometry school itself will last four years and grant you a doctor degree called Doctor of Optometry (OD).
Why OD ? Why not DO ? a bit odd eh ? Lol ....well DO stands of Doctor of Osteopathy, a totally different medical degree
After the four year degree, candidates need to pass the Board exams and get a state license to practice. This license further needs a renewal every 3 years.
So, like any other health profession, a valid license if necessary - or else the cops gonna be on your case like they finally caught this lady practicing as a OD in florida without any license. What befuddles me most is the fact she practiced without a license way for 20 years unnoticed !
Summarizing, to become an Optometrist, here's the roadmap:
High School --> 3 to 4 years Pre-optometry College --> 4 years Optometry School = OD !
To become an Opthalmologist (MD eye-surgeon), this is how it goes :
High School --> 4 years Premedical College --> 4 Years Medical School --> 1 + 3 Years in Residency Training --> 1 - 2 years in Sub-specilaty training = Phew !!
And yeah - quit ogling on this website income figures for too long, as an optometrist warns , it may spoil your vision .. he he
