Sample Physician Salaries at an Academic Medical Center

For a blog on Physician Salaries, public release of income data of physicians is feast time !! University of Missouri - Columbia (an academic medical center in midwest US) released 2006 data on their top-earners from various fields. Of course, the majority included the physicians, though top guys in other professions mostly cross the $100,000/- a year mark.

Salaries of Physicians at Academic Medical Centers is often a inquiry that lands people on this blog. A separate post researching and analyzing information on that issue will come up soon - but this is good for starters ;-).

The top earners in the list were as follows:

1. $600,519.00 = Eubanks, William S, surgery/ administration, professor
2. $531,384.36 = Calhoun, Jason H., orthopaedic surgery, professor
3. $468,180.00 = Ramshaw, Bruce J., surgery/general, associate professor
4. $432,806.04 = Winn, Hung N., ob/gyn and women’s health
5. $413,871.00 = Calhoun, Karen , otolaryngology, professor
6. $404,961.60 = Churchill, Robert, radiology, professor emeritus
7. $362,204.64 = Anthony, Douglas C., pathology and anatomical science, professor

How about the executives - CEO, CFO and the Univ President ?

1. $382,130.04 = Floyd, Elson S, president
2. $371,315.04 = Ross, James H., chief executive officer
3. $310,648.08 = Necas, Kevin J, chief financial officer
Of course the additional bonus amounts must have been good for the executives ...

Click here to check out the entire published list of wages to evaluate the base salaries of your favorite medical / surgical specialties. Note that in many academic centers, the starting salaries are small if its a salary guarantee for the first 1 to 2 years and climb up good depending on how much clinical revenue you generate (production) and how loyal you remain to the institute - this explains that large differences in the pay scales for similar positions you may see on the list, often.

Here are the 2009 Salary numbers from the same University

!

Academic medical centers have always taken the backseat as far as physician compensation is concerned. They simply cannot compete with the private enterprise since money has to be devoted to teaching and research in addition to physician salaries. Some places like Harvard medical school have decided to step up teaching wages for their physicians but mostly they have lagged. Academic Medical centers are experiencing a further crunch after medical malpractice premiums have shot up, as per this report by the AAMC

I am curious to know how much does a program director in a prestigious university earns. And will this be separate from his salary from clinical services?

There are many variables - like the type of salary plan (fixed salary guarantee v/s performance bonus, clinical and administrative duties split up, the specialty of the program director and even the size of the residency program. So a Program director who is also a Cardiologist would be expected to make more than a residency program director who is an endocrinologist.

When I looked up the name of the program director for University Missouri-Columbia (like on this sample) and checked out his salary, it was around $160,000 for 2007 - not too far from an internist salary in the same university.

I would be inclined to think that it would not be a whole lot more than a pure clinical faculty position - since a directors administrative role is over and above his clinical duties - rather replaces some of this clinical duties time-wise

My husband is a GI fellow looking for an attending position. He has received verbal offers for GI attending positions in both academics and private practice. The funny thing is that neither offer have given us any indication of the starting salary. Any clue as to the range for base salary for academics versus practice for G?
