FELLOWSHIP SALARIES IN USA
The first thing to understand is that is that 'fellowships' in USA are counted as a continuum of Graduate medical Education (Residency) and the salaries or stipends during fellowships at a given institution will depend on what 'year' are you on that continuum.
To explain further: The first year of a Residency is also called PGY1 (Post Graduate Year 1). Likewise, the second and third years will be called PGY2 and PGY3. The first Fellowship year following a 3-year residency will be termed PGY4. Now, If the residency for a particular specialty were four years - for example, Neurology, the fellowship would rather begin from PGY5 - since the 4th Year of the Residency Would be PGY4 now.
With this background, you will now see why fellowship salaries will differ for different fellowships at the same institution based on what PGY# they are, and at a given institution salary levels are rather decided by the PG Year Number.So, in our example above, at most places, you will find a PGY4 Resident earning the same as the first Year Fellow of a specialty which had a 3-year Residency.
For example, here is a 2007 Residency - Fellowship stipend table for the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center at Piscataway, NJ irrespective of specialty :
* PGY 1 $47,891 (Intern year)
* PGY 2 $51,136
* PGY 3 $54,267
* PGY 4 $57,436 (Cardio Fellowship year 1 / 4th Year Surg Residency)
* PGY 5 $58,962
* PGY 6 $60,476
* PGY 7 $61,955
* PGY 8 $63,404
* PGY 9 $64,853
