TRAUMA SURGEON SALARIES

In the USA, you get to become a Trauma Surgeon after a 5 year residency in General Surgery followed or Orthopedics, by a 2 to 3 years fellowship in Trauma Surgery. It's anybody's guess that the work is intense, hectic, physically demanding and usually more in the nights.

  • New York, NY: $340,245/-
  • Los Angeles, CA: $324,968/-
  • Houston, TX: $298,458/-
  • Miami, FL: $287,917/-
  • Seattle, WA: $316,817/-

National Average: $285,117/-

The Money is good, but you can't be in it only for the money ! A real love for treating the injured and liking the thrill of making rapid decisions when life and death hang on a thread ,is necessary to get over those daily burnouts. Dr. Kennan J. Buechter cautions: "Be sure it's what you want, as it becomes all encompassing. There are many unique sacrifices that surgeons make. e.g., I know of very few female surgeons with a "normal" life."

Like this Iranian Trauma Surgeon who laments "I could offer a woman a fancy life style, money, cars but not love" Indeed, Dr. Robert Ostrum of the Cooper University Hospital in NJ says: "Trauma's so much fun, it's so rewarding, - If it reimbursed better and the hours were between 8 and 5, everyone would want to do it."

Little wonder then that, Fellowship positions are usually not filled completely. I was even amused to see the Grant Medical center at Ohio offer a $10,000 sign-on bonus for it's Trauma Emergency Fellowship Program, besides the 60,000$ a year fellowship salary. So the only bottleneck would getting into a General Surgery / Orthopedics Residency program.

While, talking about the scope in the years to come, Dr. Charles J. Yowler puts it:

"as long as we have handguns and motorcycles, there will be plenty of business for trauma surgeons"

It amused me to read about this orthopedic trauma surgeon who was arrested for not filing state income taxes for 5 years. In this uncertain world, we know that Death and Taxes are ALWAYS certain ..LOL.

Off-note, You don't have to be a doctor to make great money ;-), so many other professions make almost as much for pretty less work hours, or maybe you could get lucky like this 84-year old retired electrician who won a $254 Million Lottery!

What other professions make great money similar to or more than doctors?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11/19/2008) :

It shouldn't matter. Do it for the love of the work and helping people or you won't last in Medical School no matter what. Also, you will be miserable in your job unless you are doing something you are interested in and love to do.

"do it for the love of the work and helping people or you won't last in Medical School"

This statement, while it sounds good and makes us feel good, is not true at all. Both my parents are doctors, and they essentially chose my profession for me. I have no more passion for medicine than I do for being a stock broker or computer programmer. And not only am I "surviving" in medical school, I'm top 10% in my class.

So this statement is not true at all, anyone who has been competitive all their life will realize that medical school is just more of the same-- working hard in order to get the top grades and be better than your peers.

In short, medical school isn't necessarily only for those who love of the work, but it is definately for competitive people--those willing to forfeit concert tickets or hanging out with family in friends, just to get bragging rights on the next exam.

the money can be great but you have to want to help and heal the sick and love what you do!!! I'm 15yrs old and truly love helping and treating the sick.I understand all the hard work that goes into being a trauma surgeon. If your in it for the money just dont do it,you have to love what you do!!! like i said before.

So I love helping people make key decisions about their helathcare needs and not in it for the money...However, I am in the bottom 20% of my class and struggling to get through (the didactics). So go figure...Like the previous poster demonstrates, many get into the field for less than honorable reasons. But whoever said life was fair?!?!?!

No you don't. If your 15 years old, I highly doubt you've ever taken a single 'hard' course, such as second semester organic chemistry or multi-variable calculus at a 4-year university. Medical school is harder-- much harder. And residency and fellowship are harder still; and the life style afterwards isn't much easier. So you have no idea the sort of hard work a trauma surgeon does. To be a trauma surgeon (or cardiothoracic/ neuro/ pretty much any invasive specialty) you have to love the work... but you also have to love the challenge, like the money, and be mildly masochistic.

wow... what he/she said!

Ditto to everyone. If you go into medicine for anything other than a love for the profession...you wont last through medical school. Even if you do, you'll become a bitter person who everyone will hate. Surgery residency is not a hurdle, it is a test of those who truly love surgery and medicine. It isn't a test of knowledge, it's a test of persistence and a test of will-power. Make it through residency with a positive attitude and still want to be a trauma surgeon, then you really love trauma.

I think the life style is one of the best, it's essentially shift work if you're in a good group. On nights when you're not on, no one will page you or bother you. You can have a life.

Don't do it for the money. I'm an attorney and I made $ 789,000 last year. And yes I love my job!
There are many ways to make good money and get paid well.

I'm a real trauma surgeon and I can tell you that you have to love what you do to keep doing it. No amount of money can make you stay in a job you hate. If you can wake up at 3 am to go see a patient and not get angry but get excited about it, then you've found the right career.

Screw the money. What other job can you wake up to everyday and say to yourself, "today I'm going to save someone's life and make a difference."

How much is that worth?

What if your just obsessed with trauma? Im an EMT and nusing student who loves a good trauma call. I feel confident I could make it through med school but didnt want to apply without knowing what kind of doctor I want to be. Found out about trauma surgery from "trauma: life in the ER" on discovery health. But, Im worried that the trauma doctors wont get as much patient contact as I'd like to have.. When i see the doc's in the ER they're always charting!! How much patient contact do they actually have? And do you reccomend this profession to a person who is an average person that is an excellent student and loves the discipline??
