Dentist Salaries in USA

A long time ago back in school, a friend and me wondered : a general physician treats and cares for the whole body, while a dentist cares ONLY for the teeth, why do dentists earn as much or more than doctors, especially the primary care physicians ???

Obviously, we were not primed in the principles of economics & insurance then, that discussion was rather driven by principles of school mathematics...LOL.

You would certainly agree that teeth are important to us and usually taken for granted until problems sprout up - making Dentists as important as any other doctors. Just like a cardiologist caring for the heart or a nephrologist caring for kidneys are specialists, a 'general dentist' too would be a specialist or sorts.

Decades ago, going to dental school was less prestigious than going to medical school, a sense which has radically changed in the new times. Dentists enjoy respect, lifestyle and yeah ..good money. This is how the average figures of a general dentist in USA would look like:

  • Houston, TX: $132,000/-
  • Los Angeles, CA: $143,000/-
  • Miami, FL: $126,000/-
  • New York, NY: $150,000/-
  • Seattle, WA: $140,000/-

Career-wise, add to these incomes the fact that dentists start earning earlier that physicians (Less schooling) and often have much less work-hours and a much more controlled lifestyle as compared to most physician specialists and non-specialists.

Some Cosmetic dentists are known to be earning as high as $500,000/ a year seeing only self-paying cash-rich patients and working for just about 4 to 5 days a week ...Sweeeet eh ?

Vanity rules !

And here are 6 rules for a profitable Dental practice that an MBA Dentist - Dr. Richard Reinitz shares based on his 25 years of experience as a Dentist. A good read :-)

bagla stop being greedy and work in pakistan a country that needs more dental care you are in it for the money you idiot that is my advice stay in pakistan. no need to go to america as they already have far too many dentists and good dental care and you wont get a job there so stick with pakistan or go to lithuania if you must.

Salary surveys for dentists are usually pretty inaccurate. They usually only survey salaried dentists (who do not own their own practice) and thus leave out the vast majority of practicing dentists. As a result, these numbers are lower than the real national average, which is $198k for general dentists and $303k for dental specialists for 30-something hour work weeks - according to the 2006 American Dental Association salary survey.

Economically, America isnt doing so good right now. Odds are, you're better off in another country.

My step-mom is a dentis from the first official university in America and the oldest (the continent not only the USA, the first university in the USA is Harvard but that was not the first university in the continent) Anyway she graduated from saint thomas aquinas in South America, she practiced dentistry for 10 years and she was making $7500 dollars a month in miami or $90000 a year, she went back to South America and she is making more money there, I think she is now working as administrator of a hospital I think. For the guys from Pakistan and Lithuania you need to get your license in the US first if you guys want to practice in the USA, for every state is different but it takes 2- 3 years, and easier way is validating the credits because some countries require you to be a doctor beofore becoming a dentist, which is good. Sometimes you have more credits than the required in the USA LOL
