GASTROENTEROLOGIST SALARIES

Most of you might remember the line from Robbin's Pathology : "Once an ulcer patient, ALWAYS an ulcer patient" - which means, a never ending market for a Gastro specialist ;-)
After completing a residency in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology remains one of the most fiercely competed and prestigious fellowships, besides Cardiology and Nephrology.

Pays are excellent and so are the job opportunities ! Lets have a quick look at how much Gastroenterologists earn as a base average annual salary in the USA

  • Houston, TX: $278,000/-
  • Los Angeles, CA: $305,000/-
  • New York, NY: $319,000/-
  • Seattle, WA: $297,000/-

Remember these are only averages, and you may might higher and lower paid Gastroenterologists. Group Practices usually pay physicians more but may have higher malpractice insurance premium rates. I did come across a job posting offering upto 425,000/- a year for an experienced Gastroenterologist for an expanding group practice in a Midwest Missouri town.

*************

Q. How to become a Gastroenterologist in USA ?

A. A 2 to 3 year fellowship after a 3 year Residency in Internal Medicine !

Mmmm very good specialty, I would be happy if I got into a GI fellowship.

I've heard of a GI doc making over a million in a year on a more relevant note.

I work as a GI in Canada. I made $520,000 this year. I work a lot though - 8 AM to 5 PM and I round every 2-3 weekends. I also work like an animal in those 10 hours of work daily, and my endoscopy days are jam packed. Pay is directly proportional to workload - I have visited colleagues in the US who make around 300k a year, but they literally work 60% of the load. If I do 16 endoscopies a day, they'l do 10. If I round on 40 patients, they'll round on 25. A busy ERCP day for them is 4 cases. For me it's 7 or 8.
