Internist Salaries
An Internist is what you become after completing your residency in Internal Medicine. And how much would you make if you did not clinch that fellowship after Internal Medicine residency? You still would make enough to make your non-physician neighbor's green with envy ;-).Here's the average yearly internist compensations in a few cities:
The average NATIONAL annual salary offers for Internal medicine as per the 2006 Physician Compensation report was $162,000/- as compared to $145,000/-. Compare this with National averages of $342,000/- for Cardiology and $351,000/- for Radiology.
An Internist working exclusively for a hospital is also called a Hospitalist, which is the latest hot job trend amongst internists, though we are now beginning to see Hospitalist fellowships.
Internal Medicine is a usual favorite amongst International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking residency positions in USA , since:
1. Many programs offer the much sought H1B work visa
2. Easier to get than other specialties due to sheer number of positions and since AMGs
3. Opens doors to tons of exciting Fellowship (Specialization) opportunities. In comparison, Family medicine has far lesser fellowship opportunities.
4. Decent pays, like you saw above

Post Your Comment !could you please tell me, how much is 160000$ after taxes?
thx
There are too many vagaries of the US tax calculation process and then the tax refund you get the following year back from the government. A good That will depend upon your deductions, tax-exempt investments, number of dependants etc. But if you were a single guy working at $160,000 a year in gross salary, in 2009 you can expect to take home about $110,000 to $120,000 after taxes depending on the state you are in, after Federal, Medicare and social security taxes. But, you will most likely be married by then, have kids, have investments, have a house, all of which would mean less tax deductions and mroe take-home :)
There are some states with no state-income taxes, which can give you additional $8000-$10,000 annual take home pay on $160,000.
You can google "income tax calculators" or "take home pay calculators" to get an estimate
