NOTE: Salaries here are the 50th Percentile baseline Salaries and may apply to mid-career levels - the lower percentile salaries (for fresh physicians) may actually be lower by 30,000- 50,000 $. They also differ widely depending on the setting (academic, group practice, solo practice) , number of work hours put in, etc.
Q. How to become a Cardiologist (Medical) in the United States ?
A. To become a Cardiologist in America, the candidate must do a three-year Cardiology Fellowship after a 3 year Residency in Internal Medicine. After the Cardiology fellowship, the candidate further becomes eligible for other super-specialties like Interventional Cardiology.

Note that Cardiology and Gastroenterology are probably the most competitive fellowships after completing Internal medicine. Heme-Oncology and Nephrology is not far behind.
Q. How long does it take to become a cardiologist in USA ?
A. 4 Years of Premedical College + 4 years of medical School + 3 years of Residency in Internal Medicine followed by a 3 Year fellowship in Cardiology. Often there could be a wait for a year before the fellowship to gain some research experience. Further training like Interventional Cardiology will take 1 to 2 years more.
Which makes it a total of at least 14 years after High School for American Medical Graduates. On the other hands, for an International Medical Graduates (IMGs), it will be another 6 years after completing Medical schooling in home country.
